Who We Are

Sustainable Energy Hawaiʻi is a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to improving the quality of life for Hawaiʻi’s residents. We are an advocacy group dedicated to raising public awareness and stimulating the political will to enable change.

We understand that the price of energy is the common factor affecting the cost of everything in our state. Our vision is a future of affordable energy for Hawaiʻi, produced using only local renewable resources. This will keep money in our local economy, producing economic equity, energy independence, and prosperity.

Our team is led by local leaders, influencers, and experts representing various sectors of our economy. Meet our team.

What is energy?

Energy is life.

It (the hydrocarbon form) plays an outsized role in just about everything, not just the gas we put in our cars or the electricity that powers our homes and businesses. It feeds, clothes, heals, and shelters us. It enables our global economy and has allowed humanity to grow and thrive. However, most of humanity is energy blind.

Understanding energy, its role, and the consequences of depletion (or hyper-competition) is essential to paving the way for a more sustainable way of life. Nate Hagen has produced a short series that explains energy in a simple, easily understood manner. Take a few minutes to learn.

What will it take to electrify the Hawaiian economy?

Learn more in a recently published report - Assessment of the Scope of Tasks to Completely Phase out Fossil Fuels in Hawaiʻi.

Our co-authored report, three years in the making and in collaboration with the Geological Survey of Finland’s (GTK) Dr. Simon Michaux, is now available. This report aims to establish baseline, scenario-driven models for the electrical power required to electrify the Hawaii economy without using fossil fuels.

Join us for Pau Hana Fridays

Want to start your weekend with an energizing discussion? Join SEH’s Pau Hana.

SEH hosts a regular Friday Pau Hana, a casual gathering of SEH and local leaders. This is generally an informal discussion of matters related to energy, transportation, environment, and sustainability.

We occasionally have special sessions where an expert shares their insights and knowledge. For more information on how to join, visit our Pau Hana Fridays page.

Hawaiʻi can keep spending billion of dollars a year on imported fuel, or it can build a self-sufficient energy system.

We're working on the second one.
